Will he or won’t he? That’s the question the fans want to know concerning a bout proposed by Chael Sonnen featuring himself and Wanderlei Silva. The two men clearly do not like each other and after his loss to Jon Jones Sonnen announced he wasn’t retiring and wanted ‘The Axe Murderer’ in Boston at UFC on Fox Sport 1. Now Chael P. is giving Silva 24 hours to accept the bout.
Wand- you have 24 hours to accept. If you do, I will donate 10% of my purse to help schools in your hometown of Curitiba .. I mean, VEGAS.

Silva has never backed down from a fight before so I bet the fight gets made. Sonnen has lost two straight to two world champions while Silva is coming off a Fight of the Year performance against Brian Stann in March. Neither are in title contention and it would be an easy fight to hype and sell to the fans.

After two straight title fight losses Chael Sonnen will get the Axe Murderer he called out earlier this week according to Dave Meltzer. Sonnen let it be known on Tuesday that he wasn’t done fighting after falling to Jon Jones last week. He then called out former PRIDE champ Wanderlei Silva who he has had a beef with for a while.
Sonnen stated his reasons for the fight on UFC Tonight.
“Wanderlei pulled a real dirt bag move on me one time. We’re in a van together, he mutters something at me, but I can’t understand what he’s saying for the life of me. Truly, I couldn’t understand him. He then puts this video on the Internet, with subtitles, because he knows I can’t understand him – I don’t even know if that’s really what he said or not – and it looks as though I’m conceding to him. I’m not going anywhere until me and Wanderlei Silva straighten this thing out once and for all,” Sonnen said. “If you’re a fighter, that doesn’t fly, it doesn’t matter if you’re in a van or not. You must respond, and I’m ready to respond to him.”
Silva doesn’t care for Sonnen’s pro wrestling theatrics and two years ago he told him in Portuguese just what he thought. Sonnen doesn’t speak that language and sat there listening intently. Since then the two men have had a war of words but now in August they will get to settle it in Boston for the first ever Fox Sports 1 UFC Show.

Former middleweight and light heavyweight title contender Chael Sonnen hinted at retirement after his loss Saturday night to Jon Jones. But after taking a couple of days off the Gangster from Oregon insists he will keep fighting and wants a bout with Wanderlei Silva in the octagon. Sonnen made the announcement on UFC Tonight.
“I will definitely continue – and at 205 pounds, unless they come up with a catchweight,” Sonnen said. “They have a couple of people that do that. I know Rich Franklin has fought at catchweights a bunch, but I’m not going to be in contendership anytime soon, and neither is Rich Franklin or a pool of other guys. So there is a little bit of room where we could meet in the middle. Now that I’ve dropped Rich’s name, this wasn’t my way of challenging Rich. I was speaking to the point of the catchweight situation. I’m going to stick around.”
“I’m not leaving this sport. Whenever I get asked about retirement, I never say it, but I always think it: I’m not going anywhere until me and Wanderlei straighten this thing out once and for all.”
Say what you want but Sonnen made himself one of the hottest commodities in MMA by using his WWE-schtick. He went from a guy no one really knew about into one of the UFC’s biggest draws after his fight with Anderson Silva two years ago when he came within two minutes of taking ‘The Spider’s’ belt.
Jon Jones left New Jersey with his UFC light heavyweight title after a first round TKO victory over Chael Sonnen. Had the fight gone another 30 seconds or so Sonnen would’ve won the belt due to a gruesome toe injury Jones sustained late in the fight. It’s not yet known just how long Jones will be out with the injury.
Sonnen may retire from MMA after the loss. Going 0-3 in title fights the charismatic Oregon native said he has nothing left to fight for. We’ll see if it’s just talk or if he will actually walk away or continue to commentate for Fox.

Chael Sonnen had his chance to shock the world tonight in Newark New Jersey at UFC 159. After accepting a fight with Jon Jones on just 8 days notice after Dan Henerson abruptly pulled out of the fight with Jones at UFC 151. The event was canceled and Jones looks like a heel for not taking the fight against the brash middleweight. But Dana White saw an opportunity and made the two men coaches on TUF 17. Jones and Sonnen coached against each other with the brash Oregon native coming out on top. But tonight at the Prudential Center Sonnen had to back up all the talking he had done for the past 6 months.
Did Sonnen shock the MMA world and dethrone the champ or did Jones pick up another easy win to extend his reign as champion. It was a fun fight. Check out the video below.

Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones are on weight and the fight is a go for tomorrow night at UFC 159. It’s interesting to see how disinterested Jones is in engaging Sonnen. He looked down instead of right into his eyes like 90% of the fighters in the UFC do. We’ll see how it shakes out tomorrow night when the two men finally get into the octagon.

UFC light heavyweight challenger Chael Sonnen is fighting Jon Jones next weekend without a UFC contract. Sonnen appeared on Steve Austin’s podcast earlier this week and talked about his status with the UFC and how he has fought his past few fights without a contract.
“I never, to this day I don’t have a contract to fight Anderson Silva. I never signed an agreement that said I would fight him, we never picked a dollar amount, we never picked a weight class. Nothing. I told those guys I would show up and I did. They never had a contract with me, they said what they would do and they did. My UFC contract expired about four months ago, I don’t know if they just haven’t realized it because they’re so busy, or if they just know they don’t need one with me. But, I got a world title fight coming up, we’ve got a sold out venue — I don’t have a piece of paper with my name on it or Jon Jones’ or anything else, but I don’t need one either. I will be there, I said I would be there, and that is how they do business,” said Sonnen. “If Dana White says something then that’s it.”
Sonnen is one of those guys whose word is good for something. He’s old school and he definitely will be needing to sign something with Zuffa longterm should he upset Jones next week. The brash Oregon native is arguably one of the biggest draws in the UFC and it’s funny he isn’t locked down with a contract.
Man, Jon Jones doesn’t mince any words when talking about the challenger for his UFC light heavyweight title, Chael Sonnen. He is right in a way. Sonnen used his mouth to get the fight and that’s something that doesn’t sit too well with the champ. Sonnen hasn’t fought at 205 in years but some how has talked himself into a title shot even after getting knocked out by Anderson Silva in his last outing.
According to Jones;
“He’s not a champion. He’s not made out of championship stuff. He just wants that spotlight. He wants that opportunity. He wants that big fight, and I’m gonna give him what he wants. I will defeat Chael Sonnen in an extremely devastating fashion.”
I do hope that Sonnen can hang with Jones to keep it interesting Jones really hasn’t been tested and seems to toy with guys at times. We will find out next month if Sonnen does have what it takes.

Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones will step into the octagon next month to decide who the man really is after months of trash talk from the former #1 middleweight contender. Sonnen is a pretty big underdog on paper but if you talk to his coach Greg Jackson Chael P. presents a lot of problems for the champ.
According to Jackson in a recent BloodyElbow interview.
There are a lot of danger zones with Chael. Chael is tougher than a lot of people give him credit for. When we didn’t want to fight him on three days notice or whatever, we’d never fight anybody on such short notice for somebody at Jon Jones level. People think he doesn’t have any punching power, but then you see him drop Anderson Silva. Once he gets on top of you, it’s trouble, and a lot of guys can’t seem to get around that ground and pound style, so if you don’t do things correctly with him, you get in trouble real quick.
We have to make sure we take him very seriously. He’s a very tough opponent and he’s very smart. He’s going to try to negate the length and push the fight forward, and we have to be ready for that. We have to be ready for a 25 minute, all out war. He’s going to try to wear Jon down with his cardio. We have to be ready for all of those eventualities to make sure that Jon is on point and ready and can execute his gameplan. It’s not going to be an easy fight.
Sonnen gave Anderson Silva fits with his wrestling but Jones is a much better wrestler than ‘The Spider’. Jones will have a definitive reach advantage but if the fight goes to the ground and Sonnen gets on top anything is possible. We’ll see how it shakes out next month.
Rashad Evans is right, in MMA anything can happen. Chael Sonnen is a pretty big underdog to UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones but if he catches him or gets in a submission the fight could shake out in Sonnen’s favor. Evans is a former champion himself and knows exactly how tough it is to face Jones. Evans came up short to the champ last year in a much anticipated grudge match between two former training partners.
The two men will face off in April at UFC 159 for Jones belt.
